My name is Jose Fajardo. I grew up on a farm in Brentwood, Calif. I’ve always loved to draw so I went to school to become a graphic designer. I had to take a photography class for my course requirement. And in 1994 I got a part-time job as a photo-tech at a small newspaper called the Ledger Dispatch in Antioch, Calif. I loved working at the paper so much that I spent all my time there which caused me to fail my photography class when I didn’t turn in my final project. The staff at the paper took me under their wing and taught me everything I needed to know about photojournalism. And in 1997 I was hired as a staff photographer covering community news in East County. In 1999 I was transferred over to our sister paper the Contra Costa Times in Walnut Creek. Since then I’ve traveled across the United States, Mexico, and El Salvador covering sports and news for the newspaper. I now live in Martinez with my wife Frances and my son J.
