Theory is a new theatre company in the Sacramento area with a commitment to gender diversity in our casting and storytelling practices.
Kate Bornstein’s 1989 play "Hidden: A Gender" is a series of episodic and interconnected stories and sketches about the joys and dangers of gender and expression. It tells the semi-autobiographical story of Kate’s social and medical transition in the 1980s, and weaves Kate’s story alongside an imagined account of the real 19th Century French intersex person Herculine Barbin. Their stories are framed by emcee Doc Grinder and his Gender Defender lackeys, who present Kate and Herculine as cautionary tales--but Doc soon loses control over the narrative when those characters begin to push back.
Starring (in order of appearance):
Ryan Eckler as Doc Grinder
Nghia Nguyen & JP Price as the Gender Defenders
J.J. Jones as Herculine
Kelsey Williams as Kate
Directed by Sawyer Kemp & Kyle Burrow
"Hidden: A Gender" is presented in coordination with the Gender Health Center. Ticket sales will benefit the GHC and their commitment to social, legal, and medical services for the trans* and queer community.
