Skip Theory Presents: HIDDEN: A GENDER
Hidden: A Gender, is activist, actor, and icon Kate Bornsteins wild romp of a play. Part autobiographical coming-out narrative, part farce, part history lesson, part vampire gothic, part game-show, part gender manifesto--this is a play designed to resist easy definitions and classification. Bornstein presents the audience with three intertwining threads of story: a version of her own social and medical transition in the 1980s, an imagined history of the real 19th century intersex person Herculine Barbin, and the snake oil-peddling emcee Doc Grinder who has specifically curated these stories to try to sell the audience an array of products to protect and "enhance" their gender. First performed in 1989, this play remains incredibly salient in 2018, asking audiences to reconsider simple binaries to see humans as the beautiful and multiplicitous beings that we truly are.
